What is POME?

POME provides a framework for cooperation in higher education in marine science which will enhance the trainee opportunities for students in marine science on Master and Ph. d. level, but also for Bachelor students.

POME will establish a closer collaboration in marine science education, which builds upon existing research co-operations between scientist from the University of Bergen, Dalhousie University and the Halifax Marine Research Institute, the Nansen Center and the Institute of Marine Research.

The measures to be implemented by POME are joint doctoral and master thesis supervision, student mobility grants (Ph. d. and Master) and student interships, collaboration in lecturing and staff mobility and topical work shops. Both partner universities and the associated network partners provide complementary expertise.

Its utilisation will generate synergies and improve the universities potential to attract good students. Such collaborations are especially important for small research environments such as oceanography. Only internationalisation of the education allows for effective resource utilisation, strengthening of the quality of education and maintaining of high standards.

POME will have the following short and long-term outcomes:

  • Stimulate co-operation and transatlantic collaboration

  • Enhance the international profile at both universities

  • Develop new models for transatlantic academic collaboration

  • Profile new areas of academic study

  • Generate specialised knowledge in areas where expertise is needed

  • Initiate and enhance network building for the coming generation of marine scientists

The participating institutes have identified 9 topical areas of mutual research interes from all four branches of marine research: biological, chemical, physical and geological oceanography:

  • Marine ecosystems

  • Carbon cycling and carbon observations

  • Ocean acidification

  • Coastal observing and prediction systems

  • Acoustics

  • Regional modelling and downscaling

  • Coastal sediment dynamics

  • Aquaculture in marine ecosystem

  • Marine environment and renewable energy
