a word from the head of department
Last week the
department’s administration has looked at solutions which would allow a
better use of the departmeent’s area. Both in order to reduce the costs of rent, and even more important, to make room for all who
will have a working space at our department from now on. As we have already
announced, a better use of space is indeed necessary – and now we finally
managed to achieve that. I have to amphasize that this does not refer to SFF
Birkelandsenteret, although this makes the situation a bit more acute – the
thing is that the centre gives us the extra boost from the faculty and UoB in
order to implement the solutions. This will have consequences for many of us,
and we intend to come up with more information on the issue within the next
week. We have already contactedresearch group leaders about this issue and
hope for a good dialogue later in the process. A great weekend to all
of you, News and general information
IFT seminar
All are welcome to
attend the open seminar where J. R. Manson, Department of Physics and
Astronomy, Clemson University, South
Carolina, USA will
hold a lecture entitled: Friday, December 7, at 14:15, Auditorium B. Coffee, tea and cake from 14:00. This year’s last issue of
IFT-posten in week 50
Next week we will have
the last issue of IFT-posten for this year. If any of you would like to
announce something for week 2 of 2013, it has to be sent or submbitted latest
by Thursday, December 13, and no later than 12:00. The canteen
Tran’s canteen will have
her last working day this year on Friday, December 14. She will open again on
7. January 2013. Registration for the Christmas
lunch, December 21
The traditional
Christmas lunch will be organized this year on Friday, December 21, at 12:00.
All employees and pensionistsare welcome to participate! You can register with
Karen-Margrete of the administration latest by December 19. Funds from the Meltzerfondet
2013
Financial support to
research-related travel and research sabbaticals: Researchers can apply
for funds supporting research-related travel in the same manner as last year.
For 2013, it will also be possible to apply for financial support for
research sabbaticals (up to 100, 000 NOK). Evaluation of funds allocation
will depend on the quality of research sabbatical programmes. The plans for
travels abroad will be given extra attention. Those applying for
research-related travels and research sabbaticals should use the same application form. Application
deadline is December 31. This year there will be
no direct funding given to research projects. The Meltzer Fund awards
annually prizes for younger scholars and for groundbreaking research
mediation. Professors and department leaders at the UoB can recommend
candidates for the Meltzerfond’s prizes. Well-grounded recommendations on prizeworthy
candidates should be signed and sent to the fund until December 31. For further information
and answers to the frequently asked questions on prizes and candidate
nominations see: Guidelines for the fund’s prizes Checklist for nominating
candidates In case of any
additional questions, contact Bente Krossøy. Announcement of funds under UiB’s
agreement with BKK
New round
of financial support is announced by BKK for projects planned in 2013.
A wide scientific profile is
also required for receiving the
project funding, and the following problem areas are being prioritized: -Technological and natural
scientific challenges related to renewable energy resources These four areas are not
meant to be limiting, and other issues related to these purposes are
naturally also encouraged. Faculties are encouraged
to identify research topics and issues anchored in faculty’s strategic
priorities and to promote applications from departments, subject areas or
individual researchers on concrete projects within the framework of BKK’s
proposal. Here you can find the announcement, the application form for research scholarships / student scholarships and budget template. There is also an attached copy of samarbeidsavtalen med BKK. The applications should
be approved by the department before they are
forwarded to the faculty. The applications must terefore be
sent to the department leader within January 7. PhD
Workshop "Scientific
Paper Writing" - Sign up before 19th December
We would like to invite you all to attend the workshop
"Scientific Paper Writing" on 16th January, 2013. This one day
workshop is aimed at young scientists (Ph.D. students and upwards) with
little or no experience in scientific paper writing. The workshop has two
main goals. Firstly, to provide the participants with a set of “tools”
helping them to present their scientific results in a clear and interesting
way and secondly to make them aware of various strategic issues connected to
paper writing (which journal to publish in etc.). The workshop is presented
in English. You are welcome to bring a draft of a paper you are working on,
but you do not have to and you do not have to be writing a paper at the moment
to participate. The workshop will be given by Bodil Holst. There are 12 places
available (there must be a minimum of 8 participants for the workshop to be
held). To enroll, send an e-mail to Karen-Margrete.Hovland@ift.uib.no before
19th December. Your registration is binding and attendance is mandatory. Time & Place: 09:00-16:00 in the "Bachelor room" (room
359), Department of Physics and Technology. Disputations
STUDENTs
h-bar
H-bar is open on Fridays from 19:00-01:00. H-bar is run by the
department’s Fagutvalget and is primarily aimed at department’s students – but
the employees are also welcome! Pub-lecture All are welcome to the
Pub-lecture where Camilla Stokkevåg will hold a lecture entitled:
Tuesday, December 11, at 19:00 at H-bar Final MSc examination
Mahsa Karimi will hold a
master thesis presentation in the field of Measurement science and instrumentation
by the following title:
Friday, December 14, at 10:15 in room 366, Department of Physics and Technology. His supervisors were Bjørn Tore Hjertaker and Kjetil Folgerø (CMR). Glenn-Andre
