From the head of department

I would like to apologize once again for the noise and discomfort related to the current reconstructions taking place at our department. Gjert is doing an amazing job in coordinating between EIA and the workers, but now and then there might be some unfortunate mishaps. As an extra effort to reduce the annoyance, we open the possibility of working from home for those of you who perceive find the reconstruction work unbearable and who are dealing with the type of work that can be done from home – particularly for those who are seated in the corridors where the reconstruction is currently taking place.

Have a great weekend,

Geir Anton

News and general information

The schedule for the reconstruction work at the department

We are unfortunately lagging behind the planned reconstruction schedule, among other things also because we have set restrictions to the amount of noise the work should produce. The way it seems right now, the 2nd floor will be finished by the end of April. The work in the 3rd floor should start in May, but with planning meeting with those effected by the work, whereas the reconstruction of the 5th floor will have to wait until after the summer. In the 3rd floor this will also involve a special reconstruction of the administrative area which will demand extra time.

Election meeting – Presentation of rector candidates

Everyone is encouraged to join the valgmøte related to the rector elections. Debate will be hosted by Frank Aarebrot.

Wednesday, April 10, from 12:00 – 14:00, Egget, Studentsenteret.

  IFT open seminar

All are welcome to attend the Horizon lecture where Lawrence M. Krauss, Arizona State University, holds a lecture by the following title:

Wednesday, April 10, at 15:00, Egget, Studentsenteret

"The question, "why is there something rather than nothing?" has been asked for millenia by people who speculate on the need for a creator of our Universe. Today, exciting scientific advances provide new insight into this cosmological mystery: Not only can something arise from nothing, something will always arise from nothing.

Deadline for registering exam dates: April 26

The deadline for course leaders to register exam dates for spring semester is April 26.This is important so as to inform the student sof the actual deadlines for unregistering for the exams, two weeks before the course’s first exam date. In case a course will have an exam before May 15, this has to be notified earlier. Send information on dates and censors to Kristine Indahl Helle.

Write to Change the World - OpEd-workshop for women on writing opinion editorials in Bergen
May 6th & 7th, 2013

The Geophysical Institute is, in collaboration with the Earth Science Women's network (ESWN), organizing an OpEd course on writing opinion editorials, specifically targeted at women May 6th & 7th, 2013.

The goal of this workshop at the University of Bergen is to promote female scientists within the scientific community, on an individual basis, and within the global community of public discourse. Please find more information on website or in the flyer. If you have questions, contact Mirjam or Rose.

Welcome to this year’s most important conference on research on environment-friendly energy May 23!

The conference is scheduled for May 23rd and this year’s topic is research for a global market. The conference will present in which ways internationalization influences Norwegian energy research. We invite to a debate on what means should be effected in order to contribute to a competitive business and research environment.

Read the programme here and register here. The conference will be arranged at Ole-Johans Dahls house at the University of Oslo.

PhD courses at University of Bergen Science Library

In April 2013 the University Library offers PhD candidates at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences a series of courses addressing publishing issues, advanced literature searching techniques and information management. The faculty highly recommends participation! The main part of the program is held on April 17th and will include a free lunch for the participants, so please note that your registration is binding.

Sommerskole ved Renmin University i Kina

For the fourth year in a row, the Renmin University arranges in i Beijing a summer school with the aim of giving students from the entire world an introduction into Chinese culture and society. The lectures are in English and cover, among other things,  Chinese politics and economy. There will also be an introductory course of Chinese language. In cooperation with The Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, two students will be selected and will be given the opportunity to participate in the course free of charge.

The summer school takes place from 3.-30. July 2013 and students who are interested in participating must deliver their applications  marked ”Summer School Renmin University” latest by April 15 at the Glass house at Langesgate 1-3. The application should consist of  a short description of their motivation for participating in the course and how this would match their education plan. Remember to mark the application with full name and student number. Send e-mail to utveksling@uib.no in case of any questions. Read more about the summer school here.
