From the head of department

The below signed has now acceeded the post of department head, and is looking forward to four exciting years in this role. I hope many of you will find the time to drop by my office in the future for a chat. Kjartan gets the role as head of teaching activities and Bjørn Tore comes in as deputy.

We are entering a rather busy period, but I hope that many of you will nonetheless find the time to consider some of the possibilities noted below. It would be nice if we could finish with the nominations for Yaras Birkelands Award. I had been told that this award has been awarded only once to a candidate from our department, so here is the chance for improval. I hope you will also consider the verification means for FORNY2020. For those generally interested in technology and more specifically in unmanned systems, it might be of interest to participate in a seminar on that topic at Sea Warfare School.

Have a great weekend!

Best regards,

Øyvind

Announcement of YARA'S BIRKELAND PRIZE 2014

Yaras Birkeland Award in physics and chemistry is dealt out on the basis of a doctoral thesis published at one of the Norwegian universities. The award alternates between physics and chemistry. This year, the award will be given within the field of physics. Suggestions for potential candidates should be sent to Norwegian Physics Association by May 15.

More information about the courses and course registration is available at HES-portal and HES-gateway.

BIOTEK2021 – Optimalization funds and FORNY2020 – Verification funds

Researchers in Bergen have the possibility to apply for several millions of support from Norwegian Research Council for projects with commercial value. This is a golden possibility to get your projects tested out, upgraded, or further developped. BTO assists you in application writing and takes the responsibility for commercial development of your project. It is important to get in contact with BTO as early as possible, so that the application gets the best possible starting point. The application deadline is set for May 20.

 Horizon Lecture

All are welcome to attend the Horizon lecture where Kathy Willis, Biodiversity Institute Oxford, UK will hold the following lecture:

·         Where can we damage? Biodiversity conservation and challenges for the future.

Thursday, May 15, at 16:00, at VilVite

A simple meal will be served after the lecture.

STAff

We have the pleasure of welcoming 2 colleagues to our department:

Anders Kulseng has been employed as substitute administrator for one year, and will be working mainly with exam scheduling, timetables and subject evaluation, as well as with web-editing and other information related issues. He has a master degree in media, and has been employed as study consultant at UoB from 2007, first at the Faculty of Humanities and most recently at Clinical Institute 1 (MOF).

Jörn Kersten has been employed as Professor of Theoretical Particle Physics as of 1st May 2014. Jörn studied at TU in Munich and did his PhD there. After several postdocs at DESY in Hamburg and ICPT in Trieste, he moved back to Hamburg. There he became the Junior Reseaerch Group Leader at the University of Hamburg in 2008. Jörn’s research field is particle physics where he works at fenomenology within the extension of standard models in particle physics and cosmology, mainly scenarios that involve supersymmetry. He is interested in processes at both LHC and the earlier Universe. Here new physics might have left traces of the first occurrences of light elements, or in the cosmic microwave bakground radiation. By comparing information from these different areas, he hopes to find out what sort of elementary particles we have not yet discovered, and what the dark matter consists of.
